This summer's 'The Purge: Anarchy' bucked just about every horror sequel trend imaginable. It was not only bigger and better than the 2013 original, it made more money. With a worldwide gross of $110 million on a budget of less than $10 million, there was never a moment of doubt that Universal, Blumhouse productions and writer/director James DeMonaco would pull a part three together. And here we are: 'The Purge 3' is now being developed.

Although their report doesn't have any story details (probably because they simply do not exist yet), Deadline broke the story, saying that DeMonaco will write and most likely direct the third installment. The open-ended nature of the 'Purge' franchise, which takes place in a dystopian future where murder is legalized for one night ever year, means that the new sequel can literally go in any direction DeMonaco and his producers choose. Whether or not it'll feature the return of any characters from parts one and two isn't a concern -- this a movie where the people come for the concept, not the characters.

However, Frank Grillo was pretty terrific in part two. Maybe find a place for him in the sequel? Pretty please?

Here's DeMonaco's official, boilerplate statement on the matter:

I never imagined that The Purge would become the phenomenon it has become and I am thrilled to continue my collaboration with Blumhouse, Sebastien Lemercier, Platinum Dunes and the great team at Universal in building The Purge into a worldwide franchise.

There is no release date for 'The Purge 3' yet, but knowing how fast and cheap Blumhouse tends to work, expect it to be in theaters by 2015.
