The swine disease PEDV was found in the United States in April. In fact, this is the first time PEDV was confirmed in this hemisphere. When I was at Pork Congress I talked  with a Minnesota Pork Producer who had a farrowing barn break with PEDV in December. PEDV will make the sows sick but they will recover, however, almost all baby pigs less than seven days old will die. I should point out PEDV poses no threat to food safety, does not infect other animals, pets, or humans. I am starting to hear and read news reports in the State News about PEDV with some indications that pork prices may increase dramatically. In the following link there is an interview with Swine Consultant Dr. Michael Brumm where you can learn what the pork industry is doing to manage PEDV.
