The 2016 Faribault High School Homecoming Coronation was held at the same time the presidential debate got underway Monday night.

The 2016 queen is Meredith Wieber and the king is Chris Lane.

At the beginning of the ceremony, Activities Director Danny Duchene announced the Grand Marshals for the parade were a couple of people with more than 50 years of combined dedication to Faribault High School: retired Activities Director Ken Hubert and retired principal Lyle Turtle.

Hubert could not be at the coronation but Turtle was in attendance and was happy to just enjoy the coronation with no duties to conduct. Duchene presented Turtle with a plaque and the royalty was then introduced.

There was a good crowd gathered at the coronation but the Michael J. Hanson Auditorium was not nearly filled to capacity.

Mistress of Ceremonies Grace Amacher and Master of Ceremonies Alex Korbel did a very good job of keeping the event moving.

The queen candidates were Courtney Albers, Carina Dorr, Kyra Flom, Madison Morris and Meredith Wieber. King candidates were Chase Ernste, Chris Lane, Alex Linse, Paul Sadergaski and Henry Sanchez.

Sadergaski performed a song while playing the piano and some of the football players sitting in my row at the auditorium rose to their feet when he finished.

I'm no vocal critic, but his range was impressive to this former choir member.

2015 Queen Samantha Pierce returned but the king and queen were not crowned by her, instead lights flashed behind the candidates and the chosen ones had the lights go solid behind them.

The king and queen now reign over homecoming week at Faribault High School including the football game Friday night against the Rochester John Marshall Rockets.

The homecoming parade will be at 2PM Friday in downtown Faribault.

I hope to have the king and queen join me at halftime during the football broadcast Friday night on Power 96 Radio.
