Tom Coffman District Conservationist with the Rice County NRCS (right) and Spencer Herbert (left) Nutrient Management specialist with the Rice County SWCD were on today's AM Minnesota Program to talk about soil health. The definition of soil health is the capacity of a soil to function. Soil is actually a living factory of bacteria and fungi that need food to do their work. I read that there are more living organisms in a teaspoon of soil that there are people on earth! Back when I was a student at the University of Minnesota soil organisms were mentioned but just that they were there and were important in breaking down crop residue. Today there is a lot of research being conducted on enhancing soil organisms and their role in crop production. Click on the link to listen to today's AM Minnesota Program.
