Rodney Atkins Says Upcoming Album is ‘a Whole Lot of Fun’
The singer hosted his fourth annual Music City Gives Back event and this year’s lineup included Lee Brice, Jana Kramer, Dustin Lynch and Josh Thompson. The artists all got together for a great cause — Nashville’s own W.O. Smith Music School.
“We just wanted to do something good that so many folks come to town for this time for the CMA Fest,” he tells ToC about how the event kicked off. “It started in 2011, there were a lot of storms in the country and the year before the whole country had reached out to Nashville to help us out with the crazy floods that hit.” With a cause in mind, they started the annual concert and he says it just keeps getting better every year.
“It just grows every year. These guys come out and come support it. It’s a great way to kick off the whole music fest.”
There was an added bonus to Atkins hosting and performing at the event — promoting his forthcoming album. He sounds very excited to eventually release it. “It was a whole lot of fun,” he says of recording the album.
“I love singing more now than I think I ever have. I felt like I’ve enjoyed it more — the process of making a record — and I love the intricate details of it. It’s just some great songs. It’s kind of pushing the envelope with some melodies for me and stuff and I’ve had a whole lot of fun. I got to write more for this album also.”
He says this album will have a few differences that fans should look out for, but that it’ll be the classic Rodney Atkins they’ve grown to know and love. “You know, it’s still songs that I think are relatable … you know kind of what I’ve built a career on.”
“It’s those kinds of songs again but something that hopefully will lift people up and be anthems,” he says. “I love anthems.”
One inspiration for the music he just finished making is his wife and fellow country singer, Falcon. “There’s a few more kind of love songs in there — kind of sideways and funny stuff,” he says. “I haven’t recorded a lot of love songs so it’s definitely influenced me in a big way.”
Atkins says he and Falcon have been writing together. “It’s amazing just that the music is in the house all the time and we’re always playing songs and working on stuff.”
“She sings so great and I don’t hear notes like she does. She just has an amazing ear and pitch and definitely hopefully we will be writing a lot of songs together.” Maybe one day we’ll even be lucky to hear the two sing together — something the crowd at the Music City Gives Back concert got to hear live.
