Record Number of Faribault Community Thanksgiving Dinners Served
The most Thanksgiving Day Faribault Community dinners were served today at the Faribault American Legion and a record number of delivered meals were also enjoyed.
Co-organizers Laura McColley and Julie Fox say they are thankful for the many volunteers that pull the event off each year with no sign up sheets.
People just show up. I should note the numbers are believed to be a record. For sure the deliveries were the highest ever.
Usually when the weather is nice the numbers are down a bit but obviously that was not the case today.
Wednesday night’s carving, peeling of potatoes, table set up and place mat drawings were completed in a record 90 minutes because of all the terrific volunteers.
625 pounds of turkey were served and they had to get more after running out during the event so Fox estimated approximately 1100 people were served the sit-down meal.
An additional 445 meals were delivered throughout Faribault and even a couple in the rural area.
After I completed a few deliveries I asked for a meal to take home and I have to say it may have been the best turkey I’ve ever had.
It was so moist and delicious. The potatoes, stuffing and beans were good too.
Like a dummy I didn’t grab an extra bag with a turkey sandwich inside or a dessert that those at the Legion and delivered meals received.
This event is one of the main reasons why I say Faribault has a huge heart.
Many communities have tried to do the same thing and just can’t get the volunteers necessary to pull it off.
So to all of those who volunteer for the Faribault Community Free Thanksgiving Dinner thanks for your efforts in providing a service that really should be available in every community.
We have an abundance of food in this country so there is no reason why people shouldn’t be able to enjoy a good meal on Thanksgiving.
Thanks again Faribault for stepping up in a big way to make a lot of people’s holiday a brighter one.
