Randolph senior Nate Overby is having a very impressive season for the Rockets, and his dominance over opponents continued Monday night in a 4-0 win over Faribault Bethlehem Academy.

The Cardinals could get just four hits off the hard-throwing right-hander and could never bunch any hits together.

Overby also had a couple of doubles in the game, with an RBI and a run scored.

Overby has a nice mix of pitches and showed them all to the Cardinal hitters. His fastball has been clocked in the mid-80s, and he throws a couple of different kinds. To go with that is a very good curve and a changeup with good movement. He told me after the game the changeup is his favorite pitch.

The senior finished the game with 99 pitches, 76 for strikes. He struck out 14 Bethlehem Academy hitters and did not walk a single batter.

Overby only had two three-ball counts the entire game and that control has been key in his success.

In 32 innings thus far this season, he has not walked a single batter and has recorded 55 strikeouts. Impressive to be sure, but here's another gem for you. He has allowed only 15 hits.

No wonder Randolph is the top-ranked team in Minnesota in Class A with an ace with those impressive statistics, but the team ERA coming into the game was 0.716.

After a strikeout reached base on an error in the bottom of the first, senior Cardinal Kollin Hanson had a one-out single and was out at second on a fielder's choice off the bat of Isaac Van Thomme. Van Thomme pitched for Bethlehem Academy and threw very well.

The senior right hander has had an issue with walks during the season but had just two of those and neither scored. What hurt Van Thomme was multiple hits in an inning.

Randolph had back-to-back hits in the fourth and three successive hits in a four-hit fifth inning to score their four runs.

Van Thomme threw 82 pitches in his six innings, 55 for strikes. He struck out four and walked two while scattering six hits.

Van Thomme was named our Faribault State Farm Insurance agents "Faribault State Farm Insurance agents Faribault player of the game." He was the only Cardinal to have more than one hit off Overby to go along with his pitching performance.

Kollin Hanson delivered a one-out single in the first and was stranded at third when the inning ended. Van Thomme had one-out singles in the fifth and seventh innings and No. 9 hitter Brendan Trump added a leadoff single to start the sixth.

Bethlehem Academy helped Overby and Randolph out a little bit too.

Isaac Van Thomme was picked off first base after his one-out single in the fourth inning and Trump was recorded out after a run down between first and second in the sixth when lead off hitter Alex Dunn couldn't get the bunt down. Overby struck out all but two of the hitters in the Cardinal lineup -- Isaac Van Thomme and Ben Jandro.

Bethlehem Academy came into the game with a team batting average of .399, so hitting had not been an issue for the Cardinals, who fell to 8-8 with the loss.

Overby had a double in the fourth inning and scored the Rockets' first run on a sacrifice fly by Matt Olson. Randolph added three more runs in the fifth when seven batters came to the plate.

A one-out single by Jackson Neil was followed by a double by No. 9 hitter David Speight for an RBI. Andrew Wenstrom followed with a single and Speight scored on a sacrifice fly by Grant Otte. Wenstrom scored on a RBI double by Overby.

Randolph is 15-0 and plays for the outright Southeast Conference title Tuesday against Lyle/Austin Pacelli in Austin.

They finish their season Thursday against Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton and Saturday night at John Burch Park in Cannon Falls in a game to be broadcast on KDHL Radio. Coverage begins at 6:45PM.
