The Randolph Rocket softball and baseball teams scored shutout victories Tuesday in Wanamingo.  The softball won 10-0 in 6 innings and the baseball 8-0 in 7 innings.  In the softball game which was broadcast on KDHL Radio the Rockets had a 5 run top of the sixth to end their game early via the 10 run rule.  Randolph freshman pitcher Morgyn Otte allowed just one hit while striking out 12 Knight batters and the Rockets collected 11 hits.  Kenyon-Wanamingo finished the game with 5 errors, 3 in the big 6th inning for Randolph.

Junior Knight pitcher Emma Berquam had 7 strikeouts and may have tired a bit in the sixth inning.  She ended the game throwing 128 pitches, 71 for strikes.  The sixth opened for Randolph with a error allowing the number nine hitter to reach base.  Chloe Kimmes was pinch hitting and stole second during the Mackenna Otte at bat.  Berquam struck out Mackenna and Morgyn Otte and then the floodgates opened.  Following the back to back strike outs came back to back walks and a hit batter.

Rocket freshman right fielder Meredith Taylor clubbed a two run single to conclude her four hit day.  Three singles and a triple and three runs scored for Taylor.  There was a throwing error allowing Taylor to score the 10th run of the game.

Randolph scored in the top of the first when sophomore shortstop Mackenna Otte started the game with a solid single to right stole second and ended up scoring on a wild pitch.  During that half inning Kenyon-Wanamingo sophomore center fielder Sydney Burow caught a ball and during the exchange dropped it.  The umpire ruled the batter out judging Burow made the catch and had it in her glove long enough but dropped it in the exchange.

In the second inning the Rockets had a run erased when the umpire said the run didn't count because the runner interfered with one of the infielders on her way to third and then home but Randolph did score on a RBI single by junior first baseman Kenna Foss.  The inning started with a strikeout, Taylor collected her first hit of the game and scored on the Foss hit.  The number nine batter was hit by a pitch and Mckenna Otte singled but again Foss was ruled out while trying to score to end the inning.

Berquam had a scoreless third inning with number three Randolph hitter freshman catcher Megan Erickson picking up a single and stealing second.

In the top of the fourth inning the Rockets added two runs.  Taylor opened the inning with a triple.  Following a ground out Foss had an RBI single.  Freshman second baseman Hayley Gunderson hit a single.  Both runners advanced a base on a throwing error attempting to throw out a runner and Foss scored on a sacrifice fly by Mackenna Otte.

The Knights collected their only hit of the game in the fourth inning when their only senior Brittney Woods had a single to right with two outs.

The Rockets scored another run in the fifth inning.  After a fly out to start the inning number five hitter sophomore left fielder Madelyn Dibble walked and stole second.  Taylor singled Dibble home and stole second, going to third on an error and was stranded there.

Otte threw 76 pitches in her six innings of work with 56 strikes and no walks.  She did hit Berquam in the head with a pitch that was scary.  Berquam looked fine and then staggered out of the left handed batters box before sitting down.  She told me following the game that she felt dizzy.  Head Coach Michael Gunderson brought in a courtesy runner and Berquam did go back in the field in fourth and had another at bat in the game.

The young Rocket team (just one senior) is now 4-0 and the Knights (also one senior) dropped to 0-5.

Our Held Bus Service Knights of the game were Berquam, Woods and Nora Woock.  Woock had a great catch of a smoking line drive off the bat of junior third baseman Andrea Splichal in the second inning and had a nice sacrifice bunt to advance sophomore Ellie Benson who was running for Berquam after she was hit by the pitch.

Line totals were:

Randolph      10 runs    11 hits  1 error   6 runners left, 4 in scoring position
