Thursday afternoon I was out at the farm getting ready to combine corn as I finished the beans earlier this week. I walked out into my pea beans as we call them. Really they are second-crop beans after peas. Early in May, Birds Eye Foods in Waseca planted the peas and it was about July 8 that they harvested them. I used a tandem disk on the field and planted these beans on July 11. It was unfortunate that it did not rain for a couple of weeks after I planted them. Some beans germinated right away and others laid in dry soil until it rained. That is why some beans are yellowing and others are still green.

It is always a gamble planting beans that late in the summer. One year I got 30 bushels an acre and another year there was nothing there to combine. It all depends on the weather the rest of the summer and when the first killing frost occurs. This year we have had a great growing season and no killing frost yet. Plus, the next few days the forecast is calling for highs in the 70s and even 80 degrees! It sure looks like the gamble is going to pay off this year!
