Tuesday afternoon I finally got back out to the farm. I planted these beans on July 15 and this is the first time I saw the field since I planted them. I did notice a few of them are just emerging now. There were some weeds that had grown in the peas when Birdseye foods harvested them. It was nice to see I got them killed after disking a couple of times. It is a bit of a long shot planting this late in the season, but at least there was moisture to get them germinated so I have a chance.

Planting beans did not cost a whole lot more than some cover crops. From what I understand, cover crops like radishes even cost quite a bit more. I probably will have to spray weeds with Roundup and add an insecticide for soybean aphids. Soybean aphids are attracted to the youngest, most tender soybeans. So, if I want a chance at harvesting these beans if the weather cooperates I will have to spend about another $10 to $13 an acre. It turned out really well last year so maybe I can get lucky two years in a row! If I don't, at least something is growing, the field will have a cover crop and some residue.
