Spring is here, and with it comes the spring sports season, and that includes track and field for Special Olympics. Special Olympics is such a great organization, and I am privileged to know several of the athletes. Owatonna Area Special Olympics offers several chances to participate throughout the year in different sports.

Track and field will be starting sometime this month; we are waiting on final confirmation of the start date. Practices will be at the Owatonna High School track from 5:30-7PM, and there will be more information posted on the Owatonna Area Special Olympics Facebook page as confirmation comes on the dates for practices. You can also get information about cancellations and other special announcements there as well.

The area meet for track will take place in Rochester at John Marshall High School on Saturday, May 13. State games will be June 22-24 at Eastview High School in Apple Valley.

Owatonna Area Special Olympics is always accepting new athletes, as well as new coaches. If you are interested in signing up as an athlete or as a coach, you can go to the Minnesota Special Olympics page and click on the athletes tab, or the get involved tab. If you have any further questions, you can also reach out to Roy Koenig, the OASO president. His email is voiceofohs@yahoo.com.

Please consider volunteering your time - there is a need for coaches - and you don't need any prior experience. I am a coach for Special Olympics, and I was not involved in any organized sports when I was younger. I got involved when my older daughter joined as an athlete. It is now a family affair for us, my younger daughter is registered as well as a Unified Partner.
