This was the announcement from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety on Wednesday: 4,351 seat belt citations and 166 child seat violations were issued Oct. 14-30.

Twenty-eight traffic fatalities were reported during that time period as well, 19 of which were people in vehicles. Of those 19, nine people were not wearing seat belts.

DPS officials also say extra enforcement resulted in more arrests and citations for other offenses such as drug possession, speeding, texting-while-driving and DWIs.

Last year, 5,550 citations were handed out during the same time period. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety reminds everyone that Minnesota law requires all motorists to buckle up both in the front and back seat or be seated in the correct child restraint.
