Hockey fans at the Rochester Rec Center were treated Wednesday night to a terrific Section 1A title game.

The game was about as even as it gets with the No. 17-rated Northfield Raiders falling to the unranked Mankato West Scarlets 1-0.

The Scarlets scored the only goal of the game 8:30 into the third period. Freshman Nick Wieben tallied the goal on an assist from junior Kyle Looft.

The Raiders outshot the Scarlets 28-26, and each team was 0 for 2 on the power play.

Junior Goalie Jackson Peterson got the shutout for Mankato West with 28 saves. Raider junior goalie Ryan Bielenberg stopped 25 shots.

Northfield swept Mankato West during the regular Big Nine season by scores of 8-3 and 5-2.

The Raiders had eight seniors on this year's Co-Big Nine Conference championship team.

Mankato West advances to next week's Minnesota High School Boys State Hockey Tournament.

The Class 2A Section 1 championship is Thursday night in Rochester. The Farmington Tigers and Lakeville North Panthers will make the trip and hook up for a trip to state on the line.
