‘Noah‘ is the first movie to release its 2014 Super Bowl ad, and now we’re starting to get a look at the larger picture of the film. There’s the familiar images of Russell Crowe preparing his ark, and looks at his family, but now we can see that fire is raining down from the heavens.
The film comes from Darren Aronofsky, who took the project on once the success of ‘Black Swan’ gave him the clout to direct a blockbuster, and allowed him to leave the arthouse behind. Aronofsky has long been courted by the mainstream, as he has previously worked on an unproduced version of ‘Batman: Year One,’ and came very close to helming ‘The Wolverine‘ for his ‘The Fountain’ star Hugh Jackman.
That comic book background (or that flirtation with making them) seems applicable to his approach to this movie. It’s a larger than life story about a man with great power and great responsibility trying to save the world, though the parallels between comic book heroes and biblical figures are nothing new (as is made obvious in the most recent Superman movies). Then again, one of the most successful movies of all time is Cecil B. DeMille’s ‘The Ten Commandments,’ which didn’t shy away from portraying miracles and acts of God. We’ll see how it all works out when ‘Noah’ opens March 28.
