After I broadcasted the Hamline 19-7 win over Carleton in football on Power 96 Saturday at Laird Stadium in Northfield, I ate supper in town and then went over to watch the Carleton Knights women's basketball team season opener at West Gym.

During our Carleton Coaches Show Saturday, Knights head coach Cassie Kosiba told us about a few of the new rules changes this season.

The rules were implemented in an effort to add more excitement to the game and, of course, enhance the offense.

The women's game is going back to four quarters instead of two halves. There will be four 10-minute quarters.

Each team receives five timeouts total and you can only carry four timeouts over to the second half.

Just like the NBA, the ball may be advanced to the front court on a timeout within the last 59.9 seconds. This could make for some exciting finishes.

A team shoots two free throws with every foul after five in each quarter. There is no more one and one.

A defender may place a forearm or open hand on post player with the ball.

Carleton lost their home opener to Northwestern of St. Paul 53-48. The Knights have a lot of new faces on their team and I think it's going to take a while for them to develop some chemistry.

The Knights had a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter and were outscored 17-3 in the final 7:07 of the game.

Nineteen turnovers didn't help their cause, and the shooting in their home gym was 34 percent total and 23 percent (4 of 17) from three-point range.

Sophomore Anne Hamilton of Chanhassen transferred from Valparaiso to Carleton and was nearly all the offense for the Knights.

Hamilton played at Minnetonka High School and finished the night with 18 points and eight rebounds in 34 minutes. No other Carleton player finished in double figures.

The 6-foot-1 Hamilton has some incredible skills. She was two of three from three-point range, has some nice ball-handling abilities and, once she and her teammates get used to playing with each other, this will be a fun team to watch.

Carleton can go small or big. They have five players over 6 feet tall, and some very quick, small guards.

Kosiba wants to get to an up-tempo style of offense and may have the depth to do that now.

Carleton is still young, with just two seniors and one junior on the roster. There are nine sophomores and five freshmen.

Our first broadcast on KDHL Radio 920 AM is December 2 when the Knights go to Claire Lynch Hall on the College of St. Benedict campus.

Coverage will begin at 6:45PM.
