The  Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry put out the 2016 Minimum Wage Report. It gives a look at minimum wage workers and their trends.

Here is a look at some of the key findings in the report.

  • There are about 1.61 million hourly workers in the state
  • About a little over 15 percent or around 248,000 make minimum wage ($9.50) per hour or less.
  • 31 percent work in eating and drinking establishments, 38 percent get overtime, tips or commissions
  • 46 percent are older than 24
  • Women more frequently get the minimum wage than man
  • 59 percent older than 20 have some college education, but 12 percent older than 20 do not have a high school diploma
  • 18 percent live in households at or below the poverty line
  • In 2016 dollars, the U.S. minimum wage fell 27 percent from 1974 to 2016 while Minnesota's is about 6 percent higher than 1974
