State Radon Officer Daniel Tranter with the Minnesota Department of Health indoor air program will be joining Rice County Public Health Information Specialist Sara Coulter on today's KDHL AM Minnesota show.

Sara tells me she will have some free radon test kits to give away and, if you tune in at 9:30AM, you can find out how to get one or go to www.youtube.com/users/KDHLRadio and watch the program at your leisure.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Surgeon General's Office have estimated as many as 20,000 lung cancer deaths are caused each year by radon. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer.

Radon-induced lung cancer costs the United States more than $2 billion per year in both direct and indirect health care costs. (Based on National Cancer Institute statistics of 14,400 annual radon lung cancer deaths-Oster,Colditz & Kelly, 1984)

According to the EPA, nearly 1 in 3 homes checked in seven states and on three Indian lands had screening levels over 4 pCi/L, the EPA's recommended action level for radon exposure.

Radon is colorless, tasteless and invisible.

I hope you will tune in an become informed and, more importantly, I hope you will test your home for radon.
