The Prep Bowl concluded with three more state champions crowned on Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The other four were determined Friday.

The early start and end to the high school football season comes to a close also.

It was crazy to see football teams with three games before school started and the season ending before Thanksgiving.

Next season the games move back indoors to the new Vikings stadium and high school football can go back to its previous schedule.

Here are your state football champions in each class.

  • Nine-man football: Grand Meadow wins third straight with 34-20 win over Underwood
  • Class A: Minneota repeats by defeating Minneapolis North 35-18
  • Class AA: Caledonia wins its sixth title in the past nine years 40-0 over Pipestone Area
  • Class AAA: Pierz rolls past Jackson County Central 36-8
  • Class AAAA: Becker Bulldogs repeat by taking a bite out of South St. Paul 35-14
  • Class AAAAA: St. Michael-Albertville gets by St. Thomas Academy 28-21
  • Class AAAAAA: Osseo Orioles edge East Ridge of Woodbury Raptors 14-13, scoring in the final 24 seconds of the game and then recovered an onside kick to seal the deal.

There were all new champions in volleyball Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

  • Class A: Waterville-Elysian-Morristown capped off their season with an incredibly efficient run in the state tournament by knocking off their inspiration to get there. It was a 3-2 thrilling win over the defending state champion Faribault Bethlehem Academy Cardinals and keeps the championship in the Gopher Conference. The Buccaneers completed their first trip to state with the top trophy.
  • Class AA: Belle Plaine was ranked No. 1 most of the season and proved why with a sweep over Concordia Academy of Roseville.
  • Class AAA: Prior Lake was ranked No. 1 much of the year, but the Eagan Wildcats outlasted the Lakers in a match for the ages. Eagan won the first two sets, Prior Lake won the next two sets and Eagan captured the fifth 15-13 for the championship. It doesn't get any closer than that.

Thanks to all the football and volleyball players for another fall full of terrific memories for this broadcaster.

I love calling these games because these kids play their hearts out and they aren't getting paid big bucks or even scholarships to do it. They do it for the love of the game.

Now it's on to winter. Let's see girls basketball, boys basketball, girls and boys hockey and wrestling all on the radio.
