It's no secret that music can affect our moods, bring back a memory, and serve as a bond between people. There are numerous genres, and countless benefits associated with music. But can listening to one type of music actually give you an advantage over others?

A new study indicated that rocking out to heavy metal music might actually give listeners an upward boost. Humboldt State University surveyed 377 people for the study. Of the 377, 154 participants labeled themselves as fans (or musicians) of metal in the '80s. When evaluating their youth, former metal fans were more likely to report being happy. Additionally, 51 percent of non-metal fans reported having regrets, compared with only 33  percent of metal fans. They also scored higher in community building, which could be tied to the sense of community they felt part of in the heyday of metal.

This was a small study, and more research needs to be done, but for now, crank up the music, sing along, and call it self improvement!
