The beef industry was the topic on today's AM Minnesota program. My guest was Royalee Rhoads, director of industry relations for the Minnesota Beef Council. No one is really sure how May Beef Month got started, but they all agree on why May was chosen. The weather normally is nice and it is the traditional start of the summer grilling season. In case you did not know, the most popular meat that is put on a grill is hamburger. The most popular for a special occasion like Memorial Day or Father's Day is a T-bone steak.

The Minnesota Beef Council is funded by dairy and cattlemen through the Beef Check-off. Whenever a beef animal is sold $1 is paid into the Beef Check-off. That money can only be used for research, education and promotion. Each year the USDA audits each state organization to make sure the federal law is being followed. As we all look forward to the great weather this weekend grilling steaks and hamburger, think of the hard-working dairy and cattlemen that raised the beef animals!
