Marvel to Release One Sequel and One Original Film Every Year

Marvel Movie Schedule

Earlier this week, Marvel announced their schedule through 2019 and it included…well, a lot of dates. So far, there are few titles actually announced, but Marvel president Kevin Feige at least has hinted at what we can expect by revealing that each year, for the next five years, will have one sequel and one original film.

Feige told IGN:

To start producing, each year, a film that was the sequel to a pre-existing, successful franchise and do something new. We’re doing that next year with Age of Ultron, with Ant-Man, and hope to continue that model in the coming years.

Now, here are the current dates that Marvel has on their upcoming release schedule.

May 6, 2016
July 8, 2016
May 5, 2017
July 28, 2017
November 3, 2017
July 6, 2018
November 2, 2018
May 3, 2019

Feige told our Mike Ryan of those upcoming films:

We know what they are and what we’d like them to be and how we’d like to proceed on them.

So, Marvel knows what these films are; they’re not just placeholder dates. If Marvel knows what these films are, do we know what these films are? Let’s try to figure it out.

The one thing we do know is that the May 6, 2016 release date is the one set aside for ‘Captain America 3‘ (famously set for a showdown with ‘Batman vs. Superman,’ which is opening on the same day). That would man that July 8, 2016 would have to be an original film and considering that ‘Doctor Strange‘ is the only upcoming Marvel film with a director attached (and widely expected to have its star announced at Comic-Con), that seems like an obvious choice for that spot.

Thor 3‘ is last of the Marvel films in “active development” and we’d guess that the May 5, 2017 would go to that property, leaving two 2017 dates to fill. We’ll then guess ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2‘ on July 28, 2017 and November 3, 2017 for a new original film (‘Black Panther’?). 2018 is where things start getting tricky. One of those is a sequel, but there aren’t any additional films left to sequel after ‘Guardians,’ ‘Thor’ and ‘Captain America’ (‘Ant-Man’ is a possibility, but we can’t imagine Marvel planning a sequel before the original even begins). ‘Avengers 3′ is very likely the May 3, 2019 date, which would rule out one of the 2018 spots. We’ll guess that the November 2, 2018 release will be the new original movie (‘Captain Marvel’), but the July 6, 2018 sequel would have to be…another Hulk movie?

That would leave an updated Marvel schedule looking like this:

May 6, 2016 – ‘Captain America 3′
July 8, 2016 – ‘Doctor Strange’
May 5, 2017 – ‘Thor 3′
July 28, 2017 – ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2′
November 3, 2017 – ‘Black Panther’
July 6, 2018 – ‘Untitled Hulk Movie’ / ‘Ant-Man 2′
November 2, 2018 – ‘Captain Marvel’
May 3, 2019 – ‘Avengers 3′

Now, most of these are guesses; educated guesses, but still, nothing beyond ‘Captain America 3′ has been confirmed yet. Of course, Marvel could have some very big surprises up their sleeve. After all, who really saw ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ coming before the big announcement at Comic-Con? And, with Comic-Con on the horizon, we could have a much more confirmed Marvel movie schedule in just a few days.
