A 24-year-old man from Lakeville has pleaded not guilty to charges he shot five demonstrators protesting the fatal shooting of Jamar Clark.

He was identified as Allen Scarsella of Lakeville. He faces assault and riot charges in Hennepin County. His defense attorneys argued that Scarsella acted in defense.

According to KSTP and Minnesota Public Radio, prosecutors allege Scarsella and three other men meant to cause trouble on Nov. 23 when they went to where demonstrators were camped out protesting the fatal shooting Clark in a confrontation with two white officers.

The three other men haven't yet entered pleas to riot charges.
