The Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights and Zumbrota-Mazeppa Cougars have a couple of state champions in the long jump and discus after the opening day of competition at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Sophomore Mara Quam of Kenyon-Wanamingo had a leap of 17 feet, 7 inches to win the event by just under 5 inches. Quam doesn't have time to celebrate, qualifying for Saturday's finals in the other two events she's participating in. Quam had the second-best time in her heat to qualify in the 100-meter hurdles and also will participate in the triple jump.

Senior Maddie Lindhart of Zumbrota-Mazeppa had a toss of 130 feet in the discus, winning by just under 3 feet.

Going into the final day after four events have been scored in the Class A girls state competition, Kenyon-Wanamingo and Zumbrota-Mazeppa are tied for first place in the team score with St. James area and Breck School.

Section 1 is doing well at the meet. In the high jump, junior Sarah Holtz of Lyle/Pacelli placed fourth and junior Chloe Holtz of Plainview-Elgin-Millville was fifth for all-state honors. Sophomore Kiera Olson of Lanesboro/Fillmore Central finished eighth to make all-state. In addition to Lindhart's championship in the discus, senior Olivia Haug of Lanesboro/Fillmore Central placed sixth in the discus for all-state status.

Qualifying for final competition Saturday from the KDHL area and Section 1 were:

  • Freshman Emma Weatherly of Byron in the 100-meter hurdles.
  • Senior Kayla Stowell of Le Sueur-Henderson, sophomore Morgan Shindelar of P-E-M and junior Autum Erickson of Chatfield in the 100-meter dash.
  • Senior Maddy Kammer of Chatfield and Stowell in the 200-meter dash. Kammer will also run in the 400-meter dash.
  • Freshman Taylor Kreitinger of Byron in the 800-meter run.
  • Tri-City United junior Kristi Frederick, junior Mikayla McCullough of P-E-M and Weatherly in the 300-meter hurdles.

Lake City participates in the 4x400 and 4x200 relays. Waterville-Elysian-Morristown and Chatfield qualified for finals in the 4x100. P-E-M is also in the 4x200 meter relay.
