Kenyon-Wanamingo Girls Win Physical Game in Waterville

The Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights scored eight more points at the free throw line in a 61-56 victory over Waterville-Elysian-Morristown on Monday night.

The two teams had similar records going in and looked pretty evenly matched throughout the game.

The Buccaneers looked like they were going to run away early, jumping out to an 11-1 lead. The Knights would experience a lead in the first half, but the Bucs led at the half 33-31.

The team's leading scorers on the season led their teams at the half. Senior Kate Masberg for W-E-M with 12 points and Mara Quam for K-W with 11.

Waterville-Elysian-Morristown would have four players score in double figures, led by Masberg's 19. Sophomores Shelby Hermel and Malea Harmon had 13 and 10 points, respectively, and senior Haley Androli added 10 points.

Our Baker and Axelson stat of the game may have been points off turnovers. W-E-M finished with 15 turnovers and K-W scored 13 points off them.

The Knights finished the game with just 11 turnovers and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown scored 8 points off them. A five-point Knight advantage and a five-point win.

Senior Mara Quam fouled out of the game with 2:26 remaining and a five-point lead. Senior Savannah Bleess hit five of seven free throws down the stretch to help seal the deal. Five-foot-8 junior Maddie McCauley scored seven points off the bench for Kenyon-Wanamingo's only scoring off the bench.

Those three, Quam, Bleess and McCauley were named our Held Bus Service of Kenyon Knights of the night. Quam and Bleess finished with 20 points each.

Kenyon-Wanamingo is 11-7 and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 9-9 on the season.

The Buccaneers are at St. Clair Tuesday night and host Maple River on Friday. The Knights are in the Castle on Friday to play Cannon Falls, and our next broadcast will be Monday when they host Randolph.
