Kenyon-Wanamingo Girls Basketball Joins Northfield and Goodhue in State Rankings
The Minnesota Basketball News latest rankings for girls high school teams was released Friday.
The Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights are rated 15th in Class 2A thanks in large part to their showing in the HIawatha Valley League vs. Three Rivers Conference showdown in Rochester.
The Knights extended a six point halftime lead to a 89-66 roll by Winona Cotter.
Mara Quam put on an offensive display few players can say they've accomplished.
The senior point guard for Kenyon-Wanamingo poured in 41 points and scored just about every way a person can score.
Breakaway layups, perfect at the free throw line, drives to the hoop, pull up jumpers in the lane and three pointers.
Apparently she is heading to Minnesota State Mankato to play volleyball but I know a lot of college basketball coaches in the area that would love to have her services.
Hayfield fans have to be shaking their heads. The Vikings have defeated Goodhue and Kenyon-Wanamingo and are rated behind the Knights in the Class 2A poll.
Hayfield has won eight straight games since opening their season with a 60-37 loss to defending State Class 2A Champion Plainview-Elgin-Millville.
The Vikings are very young with just two seniors on their team.
In Class 3A Northfield got a special mention in the Minnesota Basketball News for their defense.
Former Carleton women's basketball Head Coach and Faribault Bethlehem Academy girls basketball Head Coach Tammy Filzen has been assisting Northfield Head Coach Tony Mathison the past couple seasons. They have implemented her tenacious match up zone that gave teams fits in the MIAC and when the BA girls went to state about five years ago.
The Raiders suffered their first loss of the season in the St. Olaf Basketball Showcase Wednesday when they fell to Prior lake 65-57.
It was by far the most points they've allowed this season.
They bounced back nicely with wins Thursday and Friday against Farmington and Eagan, 58-51 and 53-37 respectively.
In Class 4A Eastview, Apple Valley and Lakeville North are in the top seven to show you how tough the South Suburban Conference is and Rochester Mayo's only loss heading into the poll release was to Faribault.
The Falcons defeated Stewartville Thursday night to win the girls portion of the Harry Browns Holiday Basketball Tournament.
It was the final holiday tournament in Faribault for awhile at least.
Faribault Activities Director Danny Duchene says the Falcon basketball teams need to pick up more games against teams in their section for seeding purposes.
