The No. 1 rated Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights never experienced a five-set match this season until the state semifinals and it might have been the difference.

The Concordia Academy of Roseville Beacons captured a five-set upset while winning the first set 25-17, the third set 29-27 and the fifth set 15-10.

Kenyon-Wanamingo was victorious in the second set 25-19 and the fourth set 25-22.

The Knights made an incredible comeback in the third set after being down 22-14 to force volleyball's overtime and had two set points but could not put the Beacons away.

Concordia Academy went to the title match last year and the experience may have contributed to their win.

Their star hitter, 5-foot-11 senior Erin Fallert, told reporters at the post-match news conference her team wasn't the top seed so the pressure in the fifth set was "On them."

Mara Quam tallied three kills in the first set and five in the second before bringing the Knights back in the third with an incredible 12 kills and nine in the fourth. She finished with 31 kills and a .272 hitting percentage. Quam also tallied 20 digs.

Megan Flom was very efficient with four kills in just five attempts in the first set, seven kills in 13 attempts in the second, two of seven in the third with still no hitting errors, three of eight in the fourth and four of eight in the fifth for a .463 hitting percentage. She had just one attack error for the match and finished with 20 kills.

Senior libero Kasey Dummer made some eye-popping digs and finished with 27. Senior setter Mia Peterson collected 49 assists and two ace serves.

The fifth set the Knights may have been a bit tired. They had to expend so much energy to force the fifth set and fell behind 6-2. They would never get closer than within two points of Concordia Academy.

Ten of the Beacons' 15 fifth-set points came off Kenyon-Wanamingo errors -- two service errors and eight attack errors.

It will be an all HVL third-place match tomorrow. Kasson-Mantorville was defeated in four sets by Maple Lake.

The Komets won the first set 25-23 before the Irish reeled off victories of 25-19, 25-17 and 25-15.

Faribault Bethlehem Academy head volleyball coach Franz Boelter will be on the call with John Anderson on Kat Kountry 105 104.9 FM beginning at 12:45PM if everything is on time.

They won't start early but could start late.
