Kenyon-Wanamingo Beats Cannon Falls in Physical Girls Basketball Game

There were rare trips down the floor when a whistle didn't blow tonight in the Castle at Kenyon-Wanamingo High School.

The Knights came from behind to defeat the Cannon Falls Bombers 45-41 in a key section and conference game.

Kenyon-Wanmingo jumped out to a 9-3 lead thanks to two 3 point baskets and three free throws by 5'8 sophomore Riley Dummer.

The Knights did a masterful job defending the Bombers leading scorer 5'5 senior Tatum Pickar.  She was held scoreless in the first half but her team still led 25-22 at the half.

5'7 senior Kara Loeschke picked up the scoring slack with 15 first half points.

Cannon Falls had their chances to pull away in the second half.

Kenyon-Wanamingo didn't score in the first five minutes of the second half and the Bombers kept missing the front end of one and one free throws.

Cannon Falls was 3 of 9 from the free throw line in the second half and finished 9 of 20 for the game.

That coupled with 18 turnovers cost the Bombers the game.

Kenyon-Wanamingo was 10 of 19 from the charity stripe.

Dummer finished with 22 points and had six three point baskets in the game.  She was 4 of 6 from the free throw line in the game and did not shoot a free throw in the second half.

The Knights sophomore was chosen one of our Held Bus Service Knights of the night along with seniors Maddie McCauley and Corynne Dahl who combined for 12 more points and made some crucial plays down the stretch.

Dahl got a big steal late and McCauley hit a free throw with 11 seconds to go to ice the game barring a foul on a three pointer.

Cannon Falls was led by Loeschke's 19 points and classmate 5'7 Kaly Banks had 11 points.

Pickar was held to 5 points in the game and got in some foul trouble in the first half meaning she had to player fewer minutes than normal.  The length of Tess Hokanson and Maddie McCauley made it difficult for her to get a shot off.

The Bombers saw their winning streak end at three games and the Knights snapped a five game losing streak.

Kenyon-Wanamingo is 3-10 overall and 2-5 in the conference while Cannon Falls is 1-5 in the H-V-L and 6-8 overall.

The Knights will be on KDHL Radio again Thursday when they travel to Pine Island.

The Bombers are at Kasson-Mantorville Friday night.

The big game in the Hiawatha Valley League Tuesday was in Hayfield where Class 1A #2 Goodhue lost to #5 Hayfield 51-45.

Goodhue had a 23-19 lead at the half.

On the boys side, Byron downed Lake City 57-55 and Goodhue scored a 50-48 overtime win over Hayfield.
