The Hayfield Vikings became the first team in the Hiawatha Valley League to defeat the Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights on Saturday.

The Vikings and Knights had a doubleheader in Hayfield and the Vikings won a pitcher's duel in the first game 2-1 while Kenyon-Wanamingo won the second game 8-1.

The No. 5 ranked Class AA Knights saw Gavin Roosen issue 12 walks while allowing just one hit in the game and struck out six.

Meanwhile Kenyon-Wanamingo scattered seven hits off Hayfield ace Adam Fjerstad and left nine runners on base. Fjerstad walked just two and struck out two. Hayfield's only hit was a double stroked by Kolby Tapp.

The Knights were led at the plate by Jake Whipple and Luke Rechtzigel with two hits each, and Ethan Benda scored their only run of the game. Hayfield's only run in game two was a homer by Brady Dahl.

Ethan Benda got the win on the hill for the Knights while scattering four hits. He walked three and struck out five.

Kenyon-Wanamingo bats came to life with 10 hits clubbed and head coach Randy Hockinson told KDHL his team had some great defensive plays.

Second baseman Blake Jacobson had two diving catches and center fielder Ted Androli added another diving stab.

Dylan Craig, Gavin Roosen and Jake Whipple each had two hits and Matt Houglum added a double for the Knights.

Kenyon-Wanamingo is now 14-2 overall and 11-1 in the Hiawatha Valley League.

  • Bethlehem Academy is runner-up in the Mankato Loyola Tournament, winning over Cleveland 10-0 in five innings and falling to St. Clair in the title game 19-3 in five innings. Kollin Hanson had two hits and Peyton Glenzinski a double in the loss. In the other games: St. Clair 15, Loyola 3 in five innings; and Loyola beat Cleveland in the third-place game 11-7
  • Faribault 7, Waseca 0 Sophomore Blake Borwege strikes out 13 and walks nobody on a cold day in Waterville.
  • Cannon Falls swept Lake City 11-0 and 11-9 Cannon Falls trailed 7-1 in second game at home going into bottom of fifth inning. Bombers had five doubles in the game, led by Max Bowen with two. Bowen got the win in relief and Tanner Carlson the save. First game was won in five innings with Hunter Reinardy throwing a three-hitter and Cannon Falls clubbing 13 hits. Bombers had four doubles in that game.  Four Bombers had multi-hit games.
  • Pine Island swept Triton 12-1 and 5-3. Panthers now 11-6 overall and 10-4 in HVL
  • Kasson-Mantorville sweeps Stewartville 1-2 and 3-1
  • Rochester Lourdes sweeps Byron 14-3 (six innings) and 12-2 (five innings)
  • Goodhue sweeps Zumbrota-Mazeppa 7-4 and 10-7
