Jason Aldean is drawing criticism after photos surfaced last week of the singer's Halloween costume. The "Gonna Know We Were Here" hitmaker (second from left in the above photo) wore a bandana, sunglasses, chains, dreadlocks and dark makeup, Nashville Gab reports.

A representative for the star confirmed his identity in the photo, telling the Guardian that Aldean was dressed as rapper Lil Wayne. Aldean's wife, Brittany Kerr, is next to him in plaid, also sporting braids and a red bandana.

Wearing dark makeup to look like a black individual, commonly known as blackface, has long been condemned as highly disrespectful in today’s society. Julianne Hough came under fire in 2013 for her costume as "Crazy Eyes" from Orange Is the New Black, publicly apologizing afterward.

Aldean is no stranger to the hip-hop community, having recorded a remix of “Dirt Road Anthem" with Ludacris and performed it together in the past, so his choice of costume isn’t totally out of left field. But his decision to wear the makeup is what is bringing criticism following the holiday. The singer has not commented, other than his representative confirming his identity in the photo and the intended costume.

Aldean recently performed “Gonna Know We Were Here” at the 2015 CMA Awards, where he was nominated for Album of the Year for Old Boots, New Dirt. He wrapped up his Burn It Down Tour in October, donating $615,000 to Susan G. Komen for breast cancer research. Aldean's next tour — the We Were Here Tour — launches in January.
