In early December I received a call from a farmer who had just bought 80 acres of land next to my farm. He asked if he could put an 8-inch main through my farm. There was an old clay main already going through my farm. I am not sure if there was something in my abstract about a drainage easement -- I did not spend the money to have it checked. You want to be a "good" neighbor, so I said he could go ahead and put the main in. I thought I would benefit from having him put the main in because it also would drain my land along the main. In addition, I said it would be nice if the main was large enough so I could tile the 18-acre field his main went through. His contractor said there was four-tenths fall and the 8-inch main would easily handle it, so I could run tile lines into his main. I told the contractor that if he got done with Bill's farm and it was not frozen too hard, to tile my field, too. It was a great opportunity to do it because all the equipment was already there. There were some pretty big chunks of frozen soil turned up as he put the main in. I am sure those big chunks will be mellow next spring. I plan on using a tandem disk to level out the tile lines.
