The Hayfield Vilkings were the No. 2 seed in the Section 1AA girls basketball tournament and fell in the semifinals today 65-49 to the No. 3 seed Rochestaer Lourdes Eagles.

The Vikings couldn't hit buckets while the Eagles did.

With 3 minutes to go in the first half, it was a three-point lead for Rochester Lourdes and they closed out the half on a 8-3 run to take a 30-22 lead.

Lourdes got layup after layup in the first half and dominated the paint and then in the second half hit a few dagger threes.

Hayfield never put together a run. Not only were they missing their three-point shots, but layups and free throws wouldn't go in either.

Five-foot-11 freshman guard Alyssa Ustby had 17 points to lead Rochester Lourdes and 5-foot-11 junior Wynter Berger added 15 points.

The Vikings had just one player in double figures. Five-foot-11 junior Maggie Streightiff had 18 points and 5-foot-9 junior Carrie Rutledge had eight points.

Hayfield had two seniors on this year's team.

The Vikings end their season 23-6 and Rochester Lourdes is 20-9.

Rochester Lourdes defeated Kenyon-Wanamingo on January 27 at Lourdes 66-56.

The Eagles have size galore with a front line of 5-foot-11, 5-foot-11, 6-foot-0 and in my mind are a match-up nightmare for the Knights of Kenyon-Wanamingo.

The Knights beat Winona Cotter 50-40 in the other semifinal, setting up the title game next Friday at 6PM in the Rochester Mayo Civic Arena.
