Wednesday afternoon I headed out to the farm to haul some corn. Most of my corn and soybeans I sell for January to March delivery. However I sell a little bit for Fall delivery so I can "core" the bin. When you fill the bin from the dryer any cracked or broken kernels of corn stay in the center of the bin. The whole kernels of corn move to the outside of the bin. When you aerate the corn the air does not move through the center of the bin with the cracked and broken kernels. There is more resistance because they are smaller and more closely packed together. The result can be corn molding and going "out of condition." Pulling a couple loads out of the bin to remove the core is a good practice to prevent moldy corn!
