We’re pretty much pre-sold on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ and the new poster and handful of behind-the-scenes images and trailer teaser aren’t going to change our mind much in either direction.
Directed by the very talented (and completely deranged) James Gunn, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ takes the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmic realm. Taking place off-Earth and starring a cast of aliens (Chris Pratt is the token human), it’s the riskiest and weirdest project Marvel Studios has attempted yet.
Not so weird and risky is the new ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ poster, which is a passable but entirely unexciting Photoshop job. Sure, it’s not the nightmare that the posters for ‘The Avengers’ were, but for a company whose movies are based on dynamic sequential art, Marvel Studios has a habit of putting out lackluster posters. This shrug-worthy design of a poster is secondary, mainly because the characters splashed across it look completely and totally nutty. Dull poster or not, this is still a movie where a killer raccoon (or technically, an alien that looks like a raccoon) and talking tree are major characters.
Here’s what we know of the film from the official synopsis:
From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team – the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits – Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand – with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.
The next ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ trailer for the film will arrive on Monday at 1 p.m. EST/10 a.m. PST, but in the meantime, here is that poster and those new on-set images, which focus on Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord (and his really cool costume). Guardians of the Galaxy’ flies into theaters on August 1.
