The Minnesota Basketball News does the rankings in high school girls and boys basketball for the Associated Press.

The first poll of the 2016-17 season has defending state champions Goodhue tops in Class 1A.

The Wildcats won the Red Wing Invitational Tournament over the weekend to get their season started on the right foot.

Goodhue head coach Josh Wieme told KDHL on the Goodhue Coaches Show on Saturday that it's tough to repeat as a section champion, let alone state, and said the girls have to be as hungry as they were last year in order to accomplish that feat.

  3. Mountain Iron-Buhl
  4. Wheaton-Herman-Norcross
  5. Cromwell
  6. Southwest Minnesota Christian
  7. Canby
  8. Cedar Mountain-Comfrey

  10. Mayer Lutheran

Plainview-Elgin-Millville is the defending state title holder in Class 2A and is not atop the first poll for that class.

Holy Angels Academy captured the Class 3A championship last March and also is not picked on top of that ranking. This is the class Faribault plays in.
