The Goodhue Wildcat girls basketball team's depth appeared to be the difference in a 60-56 win over the Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights in the Castle on Friday night.

Before the game, Knights head coach Brent Lurken told KDHL his team would have to keep tabs on 6-foot junior Sydney Lodermeier. Lodermeier and senior Maddy Miller were two of the key pieces in last year's Class A state championship run for Goodhue.

Lodermier had a very tough shooting night, with only two field goals but still had 11 points thanks to excellent free throw shooting. Miller was in foul trouble and finished with nine points.

Senior McKenzie Ryan was a difference maker for the Wildcats, pouring in 24 points that included five three-point baskets.

Kenyon-Wanamingo senior Savannah Blees hit a corner three to put her team up 27-25 at the half.

The second half started with the Knights going nearly five minutes without a field goal and Goodhue forced a number of turnovers to punch the lead up to double digits.

Kenyon-Wanamingo did commit too many turnovers (24), and Goodhue scored 23 points off turnovers.

Goodhue head coach Josh Wieme probably wasn't too excited about the way his players handled the Knights' press with 14 turnovers resulting in 12 Kenyon-Wanamingo points.

Mara Quam led Kenyon-Wanamingo with 19 points and Savannah Blees added 15.

Goodhue hosts Lyle/Pacelli at 5:30PM Saturday. A rematch of last year's subsection final when Goodhue overcame a 10-point deficit in the final two minutes to win and roll to the State Class A Title.

Kenyon-Wanamingo faces Class 3A state-ranked Kasson-Mantorville on Monday night. The game will be on KDHL Radio beginning about 7PM if everything is on time.

Friday night's junior varsity game found Kenyon-Wanamingo winning by two after one overtime so we hit the airwaves about 7:25PM.

We also awarded the Gordy's Gourmet Best Concession Stand Award for the 2015-16 season to the Knight's Lair concession stand. In a bit of irony, the first award went to Goodhue a couple of seasons ago. Expanded menu and variety are two of the key reasons why I chose Kenyon-Wanamingo to receive a gorgeous plaque from Tatge Jewelry in Kenyon.
