‘Get on Up’ Trailer: The James Brown Biopic Brings the Funk

Chadwick Boseman stars in the James Brown biopic ‘Get on Up,’ and now there’s a trailer for the movie about the Godfather of Soul’s rise to fame and fortune. Will this follow director Tate Taylor’s ‘The Help’ in being both a late summer hit and an Oscar favorite? It’s possible.

That said, marketing is its own beast, so it doesn’t seem fair to judge the film based on the trailer, but we’re curious why they would pepper it with music James Brown didn’t write, and then remix the music he did. It’s likely this is meant to appeal to people who don’t really know the artist, but it’s a strange choice when a song like “Get on Up” is so brilliant on its own. Oh well.

Here’s the film’s synopsis:

In his follow-up to the four-time Academy Award®-nominated blockbuster The Help, Tate Taylor directs 42’s Chadwick Boseman as James Brown in Get on Up.  Based on the incredible life story of the Godfather of Soul, the film will give a fearless look inside the music, moves and moods of Brown, taking audiences on the journey from his impoverished childhood to his evolution into one of the most influential figures of the 20th century.  Boseman is joined in the drama by Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Nelsan Ellis, Lennie James, Tika Sumpter, Jill Scott and Dan Aykroyd.

‘Get on Up’ opens August 1.
