A couple of years ago I bought this John Deere Gator for my 86-year-old dad to use around the farm. He loves to be outside where the action is but has a sore hip that prevents him from walking long distances. My mom grew up over by Mapleton, and the Maple River flows through the farm. My uncle still farms the land and he has a trail through the woods. He had a couple of four-wheelers, and these great-grandparents were out riding in the woods. My dad said it would be nice to have a four-wheeler for the farm.

I thought a Gator would be easier for my dad to get around on, plus I could use it as a tax deduction. Last weekend I wanted to plant beans on a farm that is only a half-mile from the home farm, but a two-mile drive on the road. My dad and mom were gone for the weekend. So, being out there by myself how could I get the soybean seed out to the field and the planter? Just to show the Gator was a legitimate farm expense, I loaded the beans and Gator on the trailer. I went out to the field, ran home with the Gator and back to the field with the planter. The Gator is nice, with the little bed on the back for picking up rocks or hauling things, too.
