The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating an accident that took the life of a former Shattuck hockey player.

He was identified as 19-year-old Samuel Oden of Edina. He was struck and killed by a semi on Interstate 494 at Concord Street in South St. Paul early Tuesday. For unknown reasons, Oden was in westbound I-494 as a pedestrian when he was struck by a semitrailer. The State Patrol said alcohol was not a factor in the accident. The patrol said another truck was also involved in the accident and the drivers were not injured.

Oden played hockey for four seasons in Faribault at Shattuck-St. Mary’s prep school. This past season, the defenseman played junior hockey in Canada, most recently for the Rayside-Balfour Canadians in northern Ontario, and was expected to return to the team this fall.
