The Minnesota fishing opener is May 9. Don't forget to get your license. And remember to grab something for mom on your way home from the lake.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reports there are about 1.5 million anglers in Minnesota. About 500,000 are expected to go out on opening day for walleye and northern on Saturday, May 9. Fishing contributes nearly $2.5 billion to the state's economy. About 35,000 Minnesota jobs are credited to the fishing industry.

Minnesota ranks second in the nation in residential fishing participation at 32 percent. Alaska is number one. Minnesota is sixth among states with the highest number of anglers. The top three are Florida, Texas and Michigan. Women account for 34 percent of Minnesota's resident anglers.

There are 11,840 lakes in Minnesota, plus 18,000 miles of rivers and streams that allow fishing.
