The Faribault Falcons defeated the Mankato West Scarlets 73-51 in opening round action in the Section 2AAA boys basketball tournament.

Faribault was the No. 4 seed and hosted No. 5 seed Mankato West.

The Falcons jumped out to a 6-0 lead and led 35-21 at the half. It was the 16th half this season Faribault has held their opponent to 21 or fewer points in a half. Faribault attacked the basket and scored 22 of their 35 points in the lane.

The Scarlets had no answer for 6-foot-8 junior Kade Hart. He had his way in the first half with 14 points and finished with 22 for the Falcons.

Brady Combs had 23 points to lead all players in the contest. Combs was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line, including four free throws after two technicals against Mankato West.

Faribault was very efficient on offense and for the most part played well defensively in the game. It was the highest point total in a game this season for the Falcons.

Senior Win Hunter had 11 points and joined Combs and Hart as Faribault State Farm Insurance Faribault players of the game courtesy of Faribault State Farm agents Tony Langerud and Jason Krohn.

All six seniors for each team got to play in the game.

The Scarlets were led by juniors Trey Burmeister and Jake Makela with 18 and 14 points respectively.

West finished their season 10-17 and Faribault improves to 14-13 and will play top seed Marshall on Saturday evening in semifinal action at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.

Marshall cruised by New Ulm 85-38 and has just three losses on the season. The Tigers are ranked third in Class 3A and are the only state-ranked team in the section.

The game will be on Power 96 Radio beginning at 5:45PM.

On the other side of the bracket, everything went according to seed also with No. 3 seed Waseca crushing Hutchinson 82-50 and No. 2 seed Mankato East dominating No. 7  Worrthingon 74-40.
