Faribault Police Capt. Neal Pederson told KDHL the lockdown of Faribault Middle School occurred after a BB gun shooting.

Lockdown was implemented because they did not immediately locate the suspect.

Pederson said at 12:44PM Tuesday, February 23, the Faribault Police School Resource Officer at the middle school was notified by a staff member that a student had shot another student with a BB handgun.

After lockdown it did not take long for the suspect to be located.

Pederson said the 12-year-old male shot a 13-year-old male in a restroom.

According to police, the suspect admitted to the shooting and told the school resource officer where the weapon was located -- in a backpack in his locker.

The student was arrested and transported to a secure juvenile facility pending charges.

The 13-year-old suffered a minor injury to his arm.

Pederson said the suspect gave authorities no reason for the shooting and the victim also did not know why he was shot.

According to the Faribault police captain, the arrested student indicated he was not targeting the 13-year-old.

Reports will be forwarded to the County Attorney's Office for possible charges.
