The Faribault Falcons girls hockey team scored a overtime goal Saturday to escape with a 1-0 win over Rochester Mayo at the Faribault Ice Arena.

Senior goalie Lauren Werner secured her third shutout of the season with 39 saves and Faribault collected their 11th victory of the season.

Sophomore goalie Sophie Butterfass was also very good for Mayo, stopping some scoring opportunities for the Falcons.

Faribault looked a bit sluggish to start the contest and so did Mayo. The Spartans played Friday night, losing to Hibbing-Chisholm 9-1.

Faribault's previous game was a 2-1 home victory over Mankato West on Thursday night.

Much like that game, it took a while for Faribault to get their offense into gear.

They did outshoot Mayo in the first period 7-4, but that would be the only period they would outshoot the Spartans. The final shot tally was 39 for Mayo and 28 for Faribault.

The winning goal came at 5:53 of the eight-minute overtime on a beautiful cross-rink pass by sophomore Payton Putrah to sophomore Allyson McCoshen.

McCoshen was winding up as Putrah passed it and struck the puck hard while it was still moving. It hit the back of the net and the Falcons celebrated.

Faribault was 0 for 3 on the power play and Mayo 0 for 4.

The Spartans fell to 2-11 overall and 2-8 in the Big Nine.

Faribault is 10-1 in the Big Nine.

Our Faribault State Farm Insurance Agents Jason Krohn and Tony Langerud players of the game were Werner, Putrah and McCoshen.

Faribault heads to Rochester on Tuesday and plays the John Marshall/Lourdes Rockets at Graham Arena.

In other Big Nine girls action Saturday: Austin rolled past Albert Lea 12-1, Mankato East got by Luverne 4-3, John Marshall collected four third-period goals to defeat Mankato West 5-1, Red Wing was blanked by Breck 5-0 and Northfield's Kate Bornhauser had a hat trick in their 7-1 win over Winona.
