The Faribault Falcons couldn't stop Red Wing on a fourth-and-10 deep in their own territory and couldn't convert a fouth-and-five themselves late in a wild offensive affair in Red Wing.

Falcons head coach Ned Louis told Power 96 the Tom's Lock and Key essential for a win was a good start. The opposite happened. Faribault got the opening kickoff and their first drive stalled inside their own 20 with negative yardage gained. Then junior punter Eric Gannon had his punt blocked; it was scooped up by Red WIng's David Howe. Howe took it to the Faribault three-yard line. On the very next play, Omonte Bowens scored and less than two minutes into the game Faribault was down 7-0.

After an unsuccessful second series where the Falcons went for a first down on fourth-and-long deep in their own territory, Red Wing started on the Faribault 28. Winger senior quarterback Tait Kelly bobbled the snap and fumbled, with Faribault junior Henry Sanchez recovering. The Falcons tied the game after an impressive drive with a Kade Hart quarterback keeper from one yard out.

Red Wing would score with 10:57 to go in the second quarter on a 12-yard pass from Kelly to junior receiver Jawon Terry and added a 72-yard pass to Terry with 6:14 to go in the first half. Faribault had some very poor tackling attempts in the half. The Wingers missed on two-point conversion attempts both times.

Faribault scored with :21 to go in the half on a Felipe Ramirez one-yard plunge and then missed the extra point to make the score Red Wing 19-Faribault 13. The Wingers weren't going to simply take a knee and head to the locker room. After a short kickoff they started on their own 37 and looked like they might score before the half going right down the field before Cody Ehlers grabbed an interception in the end zone as the half ended.

Red Wing got the ball to start the second half and Faribault's defense had their only three-and-out of the night. The offense took over and with a nice mix of run and pass scored on a Ramirez eight-yard run with 7:14 to go in the third quarter and took their first lead of the night 20-19 after Gannon's kick was good.

Red Wing scored on their next series when Samuel Hanson scampered in from nine yards out with 3:09 to go in the third frame. The TD capped an 84-yard drive and Red Wing missed another two-point conversion to make the score 25-20 Wingers.

The Falcons capped a 79-yard drive with a one-yard TD by Hart and the 6-foot-9 junior quarterback hit tight end Chase Ernste in the back of the end zone for a two-point conversion to make it Faribault in the lead 28-25.

With 7:41 to go in the game, the Wingers found themselves deep in their own territory with a fourth down and 10 yards to go and they went for it. Not only did they get the first down, but senior receiver Travis Toivonen caught a pass over the middle and took it 65 yards for the go-ahead score. A two-point pass was good and Red Wing was ahead 33-28.

Faribault methodically moved the ball down the field, and it appeared they might score as the game was ending, but they couldn't convert on a fourth down and five. Kade Hart rolled to his left and the right-handed quarterback tried to hit Cody Ehlers in the end zone but the ball was batted away.

The Wingers are 2-0 and the Falcons 0-2 on the season. My unofficial statistics were pretty even between the two teams.

Our Faribault State Farm Insurance agents Faribault players of the game were Felipe Ramirez, Chase Ernste and Kade Hart. The good news is all of those guys are juniors.

The Falcons travel to Owatonna next Friday and the Wingers host Rochester Century.
