Minnesota High School baseball has four classes this year and Faribault is one of the teams that moved to a new section for the postseason.

Faribault is the No. 7 seed in the seven-team Section 2 AAA Tournament, and unlike a number of sections the tournament will be double elimination from the very beginning.

The bottom four teams in the section go to New Ulm this Thursday and resume action on Saturday to determine the No. 4 seed in the final four, which begins on June 1.

That means the winner of the "First Four," as they call it, will play either three or four games before entering the final four, where the top three seeds await the No. 4 seed.

Faribault will open with the No. 4 seed Worthington Trojans at 5PM Thursday at Johnson Park in New Ulm and, win or lose, play a second game at 7PM at Mueller or Johnson Park.

If they win both games Thursday, they play at 2PM Saturday, and if they split Thursday the Falcons would play at noon Saturday for a chance to get into the 2PM encounter.

The winner of the "First Four" would enter the "Final Four" on Wednesday, June 1, and the first round of the final four would be played at the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds then go back to New Ulm.

The No. 4 seed determined after this Thursday and Saturday games goes to top seed Mankato West on Wednesday, June 1, and the double elimination starts all over again, resuming June 4 in New Ulm.

The other "First Four" game Thursday at 5PM at Mueller Park in New Ulm is No. 5 seed Mankato East playing No. 6 seed Waseca.

The other "Final Four" game has No. 2 seed Marshall hosting No. 3 seed New Ulm.

The team winning their first two games waits for their opponent after winning on June 4 and doesn't have to play until 5PM June 8 in New Ulm.

The loser's bracket final game would be June 7 at 6PM and that team would have to beat the winner's bracket squad twice to advance to state.

The Class AAA State Tournament would be played at Siebert Field and the University of Northwestern in the Twin Cities June 16 and 17 and the champion at Target Field on June 20 at 4PM.
