The Hy-Vee Food store in Faribault was a busy place Friday, with the Rice County Farm Bureau sponsoring Food Awareness Day. They teamed up with the Dakota Rice Corn and Soybean Growers, Rice County Pork Producers, Rice County American Dairy Association and the Minnesota Turkey Growers to talk with Hy-Vee shoppers about how their food gets to the grocery store. There were some shoppers that just wanted to get the free coupons or other things that the groups were giving away but most did have questions about how livestock were taken care of or how farmer protects the environment.

One of the messages that the Rice County Farm Bureau and other groups wanted to tell is that Americans enjoy the safest, most affordable food supply in the world. The average American family pays far less of their take-home pay on food than any other country in the world. However their are some families in our communities that are having a tough time feeding their families. Many times it is a temporary situation brought on by a losing a job, or medical bills. That is why the Rice County Food Shelf is there. The Rice County Farm Bureau, Dakota Rice Corn and Soybean Growers, Minnesota Turkey Growers, Rice County American Dairy Association and the Rice County Pork Producers all made a cash donation the Rice County Food Shelf.
