Rice County District Conservationist Tom Coffman will be my guest on AM Minnesota today. We will talk about the conservation provisions in the new farm bill. As I understand it, there are not any new programs, and the ones we are familiar with were written into the new farm bill. There may be a few new twists to the current programs. One that I am aware of relates to conservation compliance and crop insurance.

In the past if you were in the farm bill, to be eligible for any payments you had to be compliant with the conservation provisions and sod buster and swamp buster. Almost all farmers purchase crop insurance that is subsidized by the USDA. You did not have to worry about conservations if you purchased crop insurance but did not sign up for the farm bill. Now to be eligible for crop insurance subsidies you have to be compliant with the conservations. We will get all the details this morning at 9:30. I am sure buffer strips will come up, too.
