Some years the corn dryers are running 24 hours a day. This is not one of those years. In fact when I started harvesting corn it was at 16-17 percent moisture. Corn must be under 15.5 percent moisture otherwise you will get docked at the elevator. To safely store corn into next summer it needs to be about 13 percent. I always haul my corn out during the winter so I shoot for about 14 percent moisture coming out of the dryer. Some years when the corn is 25 percent you end up having to wait for the dryer as you can harvest corn faster than you can dry it.

Last weekend I moved into another corn hybrid that was 13-14 percent. I was not really surprised as it was a 100-day hybrid and the first one I harvested was a 103. All the rest of my corn is about 100 days in maturity. It is really nice when you do not have to dry the corn but can just put it in the bin. That means my propane bill for corn drying will be very small this year!
