A while back, I shared some footage of the old Faribault Junior High demolition. Part one focused on demolition, but toward the end of the video, a time capsule from 1913 when the school was built was uncovered. In part two, the contents of that time capsule are revealed.

Time passes, new buildings pop up and sometimes old buildings are taken down. I recently came across video footage from April 1989 of the demolition of the old Faribault Junior High School.

As they peel back and begin pulling out the pieces of history carefully stored and hidden away for 76 years, people gather around to see what is inside. Among the items are a program from the dedication of then new junior high building, a laws of Minnesota book, and several speeches. Additionally, pictures of the old schools including the Main Street School, Central School, and Garfield School are also present along with class pictures, a copy of the Annual, a couple of newspapers, and a short history of Faribault. The people handling the time capsule then decided and announced that these items should be saved and preserved and let the crowd on hand know that a display will be created at the museum. What items do you think would be important to include if you were to create a time capsule today?

The old Faribault Junior High School was on Fourth Street, in the location where the Rice County Government Building now sits. It was a brick building with large front steps and was torn down in 1989. The current Faribault Middle School was built in 1985.
