It was a couple years ago I watched a special series on the History Chanel called the Titans That Built America. One of those titans was Andrew Carnegie who built Carnegie Steel in Homestead Pennsylvania. Last week when Louise and I were in Pittsburg our hotel was located on the very site of Carnegie Steel. In addition Steve's apartment complex was also on the former site of Carnegie Steel.

After the steel mill was closed the site was redeveloped and is now called the Waterfront. It is a very nice area with shops, apartments, restaurants and a theater. It is called the Waterfront because it is right on the Monongahela River. It was fun to watch the barge traffic going up and down the river. The city of Pittsburg is on one side of the Monongahela river and across the river is Homestead.

Walking along the Waterfront, I thought about the steel mill and what it was like in that day. Much of the steel for World War II was made where I was walking. When the area was redeveloped they left parts of the steel mill as historic monuments. This Gantry Crane was left right next to our hotel. With the Gantry Crane raw steel was loaded onto barges. About 2 blocks away 12 of the smokestacks were also left.
