Rice County and six other area counties follow the same trend as the state when it comes to deaths.

According to Minnesota Department of Health statistics for 2014, cancer was the leading cause of death in the state. The same is true in four of seven southern Minnesota counties but there are variations in each of the county's top five causes of death.

In Rice County in 2014, cancer was the top cause of death with 105 deaths attributed to cancer. Second on the list is heart disease with 77. Third was chronic lower respiratory disease (CLRD) with 33. Fourth was stroke with 29, and fifth unintentional injury with 27.
